It is easy to put into operation, can be expanded flexibly and remains economical to operate over the long term.

With our GPON-based architecture, point-to-multipoint becomes as simple as classic point-to-point. The solution is robust, lean and ready for rollout – designed for technical communication networks that need to grow over many years while staying simple.

Trigon combines many years of experience in building FTTH and smart meter networks as well as IoT solutions with a practical system architecture. Trigon has been implementing such networks since 2009; in 2021, a smart meter transport network was also successfully realised. This experience forms the basis for a robust, long-term operable and economical solution.

Robust architecture for technical services

The solution is based on a clearly structured GPON architecture. In the PoP, the lighting unit takes over the central GPON function. Optical distribution is handled by passive splitters. In the buildings, the signals are converted into Ethernet communication by ONU end devices or SFP ONU modules.

This allows smart metering, heating applications and other technical services to be connected via the same infrastructure. The services are cleanly separated at the logical level using VLANs. This keeps the architecture clear, secure and expandable.

This separation is particularly important for smart meter and IoT applications. Different applications can be operated independently of each other without having to build parallel infrastructures.

MARS OLT from GX-Group

The central component is the MARS OLT from GX-Group. The MARS OLT is a compact GPON platform for building FTTH, smart meter and IoT networks. In the PoP, it provides the central lighting of the passive fiber optic infrastructure and connects the decentralised ONU/ONT end devices with the higher-level network.

The MARS MOLT33-8P/16P has 8 or 16 GPON ports, two 10G SFP+ uplink ports and four additional GE/SFP combo ports. This makes the device very well suited for building compact, powerful and gradually expandable access infrastructures. The platform supports GPON according to ITU-T G.984.x / G.988, OMCI remote management and GPON data rates of 2.5 Gbit/s downstream and 1.25 Gbit/s upstream.

For operation, the MARS OLT provides important functions such as VLAN features, bandwidth control and optical performance monitoring of the PON ports. The system also supports management and diagnostic access via CLI, web, Telnet and SNMP. Functions such as 1+1 power hot backup, Type B PON protection, ERPS, RSTP and loopback detection contribute to stable operation in technical infrastructures.

GX-Group is a technology manufacturer in the field of broadband, fiber optic and access networks. The company develops solutions for modern FTTx, PON and network infrastructures and, with the MARS OLT, provides a platform that can be used for scalable, open and economical access networks.

Open for the future instead of tied to one manufacturer

The first priority is secure functionality with the smart managers. The solution has been tested for interoperability with the common smart managers in the Swiss market and is designed to integrate cleanly into existing smart meter environments.

Building on this, the openness of the architecture is also evident in the network components. The solution is not limited to a closed end-device ecosystem, but is open to different ONU/ONT manufacturers. Interoperability has been tested, among others, with components from 6com, GX-Group, Nokia and ONU BB GmbH.

This avoids classic vendor lock-in. Operators retain greater freedom when it comes to procurement, replacement, expansion and further development of their infrastructure. This is particularly important for long-term networks that are operated, expanded and adapted over many years.

In short: the infrastructure remains open. Operators are not forced to stay with the same end-device manufacturer for years. If technical requirements, availability, prices or procurement strategies change, the ONU/ONT side can be adapted flexibly.

A true plug-and-play solution

The central advantage lies in the automated onboarding of ONU/ONT end devices. Thanks to Auto Find and Auto Registration, newly connected participants are automatically detected and put into operation based on defined profiles. This significantly reduces the effort required for installation, expansion and device replacement.

The individual ONU/ONT end devices do not have to be configured manually or inventoried in advance. New participants can be integrated in a standardised way, making rollouts much easier, faster and less prone to errors. This is a decisive advantage, especially in large-scale smart meter projects.

At the same time, no separate manufacturer NMS is required for basic operation. The OLT component can be operated independently. A management system can be used if desired – but it is not a prerequisite. This keeps the solution lean, clear and independent of unnecessary system complexity. In line with this, Trigon relies on simple, vendor-independent and automatable operating models for network management.

Flexible expansion without architectural disruption

Another highlight is the free choice of location in the network design. Since no large modular OLT platform has to be installed at one central site, the solution can be distributed flexibly across several PoP locations.

This is particularly advantageous for networks that grow in stages. Operators can expand wherever it makes technical and economic sense – without having to fundamentally change the architecture.

This makes the solution very well suited for long-term rollouts in which new properties, services or applications are added over several years.

Compact and efficient smart meter connection

For smart metering, an SFP ONU module can be used directly in the smart manager with SFP slot. This means no additional active devices are required on site. The solution remains space-saving, energy-efficient and low-maintenance.

For operators, this means fewer components in the field, lower energy consumption and less maintenance effort.

Our PON solution combines the efficiency of point-to-multipoint with the simplicity that many operators previously only knew from point-to-point networks. It enables expansion in stages, reduces operational complexity and creates an infrastructure that can be used for the long term.

The most important benefits at a glance: true plug-and-play commissioning, no mandatory manufacturer NMS, no vendor lock-in, support for different ONU/ONT manufacturers, VLAN-based service separation, autonomous operation without Internet dependency and flexible expansion across several locations.

Are you planning smart metering, heating or IoT over fibre?
