The platform comprises two variants: the XGS78x for XGS-PON networks and the PX78x for AON or point-to-point architectures.
text

The Aura 78x therefore covers two network models that are relevant in the Swiss FTTH market: passive optical networks with XGS-PON and active Ethernet connections. Both variants are already in productive use at service providers. For network operators, this is relevant because the selection of a CPE is not determined only by the physical interface and maximum data rate, but also by provisioning, interoperability, remote management, firmware lifecycle and operational integration.

Two variants for different access architectures

The XGS78x is intended for use in XGS-PON networks. XGS-PON enables symmetric transmission rates of up to 10 Gbit/s on the PON infrastructure and is typically used in point-to-multipoint architectures. Several end customers share a PON cell, while subscriber separation and service assignment are handled through the OLT and ONT/CPE configuration. The PX78x is designed for AON (Active Optical Network) networks. In these architectures, the end customer receives a dedicated Ethernet connection to the access switch or aggregation network. For providers with AON infrastructure, this is particularly relevant where existing point-to-point networks are to be continued or standardised with new CPE generations. A common device family for both access models can simplify operational processes. These include inventory management, spare-parts management, support, documentation and consistent training and operations processes.

BBF.247 certification is expected later this year. This certification is relevant for providers because it supports standards compliance and multi-vendor interoperability of PON end devices. On this basis, we expect Swisscom approval in Q1/Q2 2027. After that, the XGS78x should be deployable on BBCS connections.

Interoperability in the Swiss FTTH environment

In the Swiss market, interoperability between CPE, OLT and provisioning system is a central criterion. The XGS-PON variant XGS78x is interoperable with the Nokia and Huawei OLT platforms commonly used in Switzerland. This allows it to be deployed in existing XGS-PON environments without requiring fundamental changes to the OLT infrastructure. For operation in PON networks, the optical interface is only one aspect; OMCI behaviour, service profiles, VLAN assignment, QoS parameters, firmware management and correct registration at the OLT are also particularly relevant. In practice, these points determine whether a CPE works not only in the lab, but also stably and reproducibly in the field.

Software architecture with IOWRT

A technical focus of the Aura 78x is its software architecture. The platform is based on IOWRT, an open, Linux-based operating system from Genexis. Compared with traditional, largely closed CPE firmware, this approach provides more flexibility for integration, extension and operation. For service providers, remote management, controlled software updates, configuration management and integration into existing OSS/BSS processes are particularly relevant. An open Linux-based architecture also makes it easier to adapt to customer-specific service models without having to integrate every functional module directly into the base firmware.

Container technology for decoupled services

In addition to classic CPE functions, the Aura 78x can also be used as a platform for additional services. Container technology allows applications to be installed, updated and operated separately from the base system. This approach is particularly relevant for provider services that should be delivered independently of core routing and access operation. Examples include security functions, parental controls, diagnostic agents, monitoring, performance measurements and other value-added services. One example is the integration of security solutions such as F-Secure. Containerised applications have the advantage that they can be managed modularly. Updates to individual services can therefore be separated more effectively from the firmware lifecycle of the operating system. At the same time, the basic functionality of the CPE remains more stable, because additional applications do not necessarily have to be integrated deeply into the operating system.

Sustainability and hardware lifecycle

In addition to technical operating parameters, the hardware lifecycle of CPEs is becoming increasingly important. The Aura 78x is produced with a housing made from 90 percent recycled plastic. In large rollouts, this can make a relevant contribution to reducing material usage. From a technical perspective, however, sustainability is not only a question of housing material. Energy consumption, software maintenance, update capability, spare-parts availability and the possible service life of the devices are also decisive. A CPE that can be maintained and functionally extended in software over several years reduces replacement cycles and simplifies long-term operation.

Do you operate an XGS-PON / AON network?
