3G UMTS: 20-year-old technology retires

2G technology has already been discontinued; now 3G UMTS is making way for faster networks. According to mobile operators, 3G will be around until 2025. Enough time to replace all the mobile routers.

These monitoring and surveillance systems are affected by the shutdown of the 3G UMTS network.

3G is the standard for many applications. For example, the technology is used for monitoring or surveillance in the following applications:

• Heating and heat pumps
• Elevator incl. safety systems with emergency call
• Agricultural and environmental monitoring
• Vehicle and machine tracking
• Electric garage doors
• Vending machines
• Measurement of levels (water reservoirs, salt, mobile toilets, etc.)

Ensure all your sensors’ relevant mobile routers support 4G or 5G.

Move to 4G or 5G without disruption: Replace or migrate to another technology.

There are several ways to replace a 3G device:

• Replacing the old mobile router with a next-generation one
• Implementing a different network solution

Depending on the application, network-based access technologies such as LoRaWAN can be used as an alternative to 3G UMTS devices. Have your requirements changed? Do you need more functionality?
